Cud

Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell, Scritti Politti, and The Mekons, CUD were the pre-Britpop answer to doleful shoegazing bands – fun-loving, light-hearted, romantic and downright catchy. Alternatively loved or loathed like a yeast extract, CUD are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight, funky rhythm section of William Potter, bass and Gogs Byrn, drums. CUD were initially lauded for their quirky Peel session cover of ‘You Sexy Thing’ in 1987. They soon built up a huge live following and buffed up their repertoire with a string of Un-straight pop beauties, best exemplified by the 1990 album ‘Leggy Mambo’. This led to a major-label deal with A&M in 1991, front-page NME coverage, massive sellout gigs and proper Top 30 hits, ‘Rich and Strange’ and ‘Purple Love Balloon’.

Misunderstood by record companies and press, CUD packed away their guitars and sticks in 1995 but, bolstered by a greatest hits anthology (‘Rich and Strange’) in 2006, they agreed to tread the boards again, with a further reunion following in 2012 (now with original guitarist and key songwriter Mike Dunphy) and continue to find an army of ‘Space CUDets’ still eager to sing along, dance like fruitcakes and invade their stage.

Utah Saints

Utah Saints have been making music, DJ’ing and playing gigs around the globe since the birth of House Music. The world renowned duo have released 9 Top 40 UK hits, 4 of which hit the Top 10, and sold over 2 million records worldwide. Precariously walking the tightrope between genres and also between the underground and mainstream, Utah Saints roots are firmly in electronic dance music. Having met in a club in Leeds at the beginning of the rave movement in the UK, they’ve subsequently established themselves as pioneers of sampling in dance music. Alongside this success, they set up and promoted award winning and legendary club nights The Gallery and SugarBeatClub in Leeds with residencies also in Edinburgh and London. They have recorded and presented shows for BBC Radio 1, Kiss and Ministry of Sound.

Utah Saints are still very much at the top of their game, DJ’ing regularly each month as well as curating festival stages such as Beatherder – putting on an eclectic range of artists and DJ’s. They have played alongside diverse artists from DJ Zinc to Justice, Zane Lowe to A-Trak, Friendly Fires to Boys Noize and U2 to Public Enemy. They have DJ’d and played at over 3000 events from underground clubs to festival mainstages, including supporting U2 on the Zooropa stadium tour.

Their collaborations have been as eclectic as the music they create. From sampling to the production and writing of tracks with artists including Michael Stipe from REM, Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Edwin Starr, Chuck D (Public Enemy), Terrorvision, Arthur Baker, Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow), Drumsound and Bassline Smith to name a few…

Recent accolades (2022) include being listed in Rolling Stone as one of the 200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time with ‘Something Good’ listed at 138. Something Good 08, was the most played track on Radio One and was the 10th most streamed track of that year, it has recently been awarded Gold status in the UK.

When the pioneering musicians aren’t playing at clubs and festivals in various parts of the world, they can be found in the studio working on their own material as well as producing and remixing other artists from The Stone Roses and Girls Aloud to Bring Me The Horizon and Hawkwind.

The Utah’s also run a successful record label, along with adding film scores, soundtracks, video game and incidental music production to their ever-expanding portfolio. Finally, they are planning to release new music as Utah Saints.

The House of Love

The House of Love were one of the great bands of the proto-Britpop era of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Following their critically acclaimed 1988 Creation Records’ debut, The House Of Love signed to Fontana Recordings the following year and embarked on four years of non-stop recording and touring that would take them into the mainstream. Early singles such as ‘Shine On’, ‘Christine’ and ‘Destroy The Heart’ were followed in the Fontana years with more classics such as ‘Never’, ‘I Don’t Know Why I Love You’, ‘Beatles and the Stones’, ‘Shine On (new version)’, ‘The Girl With The Loneliest Eyes’, ‘Crush Me’ & more.

The Bluetones

Back due to phenomenal demand

“The Bluetones are a band tied to their Brit Pop past but with tunes that begin to transcend it too” Louder Than War

The Bluetones first came to prominence in 1995, when their debut release ‘Are You Blue Or Are You Blind’ broke into the Top 40. The single proved to be the launching pad for a run that saw 14 hit singles and 6 albums follow on from it. From thereon, the band, made up of brothers Mark & Scott Morriss alongside Adam Devlin and Eds Chesters, enjoyed considerable UK and Ireland successes, extending out across into Europe and Japan, before taking a hiatus in 2011 that lasted for 4 years.

Since then they have re-established themselves as one of the UK’s most consistently entertaining live acts, regularly touring their extensive catalogue to their army of devoted fans. 2024 will see the release of the first new Bluetones material in 14 years, and promises to be as exciting a year for the group as they’ve ever enjoyed. A renaissance that will see the four original band members take in the summer festivals before a full UK tour in the autumn/winter of 2024.

“The Bluetones run the gamut from classic indie-pop to psychedelic-tinged rock with unselfconscious ease” – The Scotsman
